Patter Up - Thoughts on Performing By Eric Howell Sharp The magic lies not in the wand or the trick but in the magician. The flare, style and patter is the most important element of a great magic show. Many routines that you buy from reputable magic shops or at on-line retailers will include some patter to go along with the routine. This is a great starting point. Once you have mastered the trick and are ready to perform it you can use the patter. A smart performer will listen to his audience over many performances and the patter will evolve over time to get more laughs, open mouth amazement and have more overall impact. I have adapted my routines to fit my personal style. One of my favorite routines is Trevor Duffy's "Minds In Focus". This is an excellent card trick that is easy to do. It is great for strolling and talking to couples. When I find a married couple at a cocktail party I ask them how long they have been married. I am pleased to report that even in Los Angeles ( La La Land) I find silver and golden anniversaries! I tell the couple that after so many years together (or after one date) it is time to find out how compatible they are.
